About
The Shakespeare Troupe at Cornell is located at the Ithaca Campus of Cornell University and was reinstated in Fall 2019. Every year, the Shakespeare Troupe puts on one major show and multiple low commitment shows known as Dorm Room Shakespeare (DRS). DRS is an opportunity for anyone to sign up to direct or act without an audition process, requires only one rehearsal and no memorization, and is brought together via props the actors have in their rooms or are made from materials the actors have.
Mission
The mission of the Shakespeare Troupe at Cornell is to make Shakespeare a more accessible art form to the general public. Traditionally considered to be an elite form of theatre only palatable to white, middle class audiences, Shakespeare often seems out of reach or dated to most undergraduate students. The purpose, then, of this troupe is to demonstrate that a) Shakespeare’s writing is still as relevant as ever and that b) his work can truly be enjoyed by and accessible to any audience.
Green Practices
We have shared props with Risley Theatre and Cog Dog Theatre troupe and the focus of DRS is to try to reuse and throw together props/costumes that we already have in our Dorm Rooms.
Highlighting of local issues
DRS tickets are going to soon become pay what you want and will be donated to a local ecological effort to give back to the spaces we live in.
