About
Some Kind of Theatre is an Edinburgh-based theatre company who create literary theatre. When not lockdowned by plague, SKoT tours work in ways that focus on sustainability and engagement within communities. Some Kind of Theatre was founded in 2015 and, since 2016, has been delivering abridged, accessible Shakespeare performances to audiences as part of its Shakespeare On The Sofa project.
Mission
We aim to bring books and Shakespeare to life onstage for audiences. We are committed to accessibility and sustainability in our work.
Some Kind of Theatre's Green Theatre Practices
- We arrange travel on tour to be as sustainable as possible.
- At least 75% of the props, scenery, costumes for each of our shows are reclaimed, upcycled, or borrowed to reduce waste.
- We have a visual spreadsheet of all of our costume/props/set to make sharing these with other companies as easy as possible.
- We print fewer flyers/posters, etc, than the recommended guidelines for events like the Edinburgh Festival Fringe and flyer consciously to avoid contributing to litter or overprinting of flyers. We use recycled paper.
- We use local, sustainable businesses for the printing of merchandise t-shirts and do not over-order.
- We create work with environmental themes
- We encourage audience members to use public transport to travel to our shows.
How Some Kind of Theatre Highlights Ecological Issues
The Sprite In The Dolls House (2019): this eco-fable for children aged 7-10 and their families had a pro-environment, anti-consumptionist message. The Tempest (upcoming 2022): we are working with Twisted Thistle Theatre and Craigmillar Park, Edinburgh to create a production of The Tempest with environmental themes. Audience members can participate in litter picking at the park to receive heavily discounted tickets.
Eco Goals
We would like to use Shakespeare to talk more about the environment and the urgency of protecting it.
